Hi! God, everything’s been mental lately. I’ve been spending a lot of time sick/stressed out and I think that or my new shampoo has been ruining my skin.

So, I went to the Naked 2 launch in Preston on the 7th. It was fun, but I don’t think I’ll get Naked 2 just yet. I still have so much of Naked 1 and the 15th Anniversary palette to work through that it seems a bit pointless atm.

I have done a bit of drugstore/freebie hauling (and a bit of UD hauling shhh), so let’s see those things.

Yeah, that’s more or less everything. I also got a free lipgloss with the accessorize highlighter but I can’t find it.

Clockwise from top left:
Accessorize Highlighter; Sample size Dior New Look Mascara; Sample of Chocomania Body Butter; Urban Decay Blusher brush; Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer in FBI; Maybelline Dream Touch Blush in Berry; Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid Foundation in Cameo; Rimmel Stay Matte Finishing Powder in Transparent; The Body Shop Vanilla Body Spray; The Body Shop Chocomania Shower Lotion; The Body Shop Banana Shampoo and Conditioner;  The Body Shop Almond Cuticle Oil; The Body Shop Chocomania Lip Butter; Soap and Glory Thick and Fast Mascara (free with Elle magazine); The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter (Small; free because I spent £15 at TBS).

A close up of today’s haul. I’m really excited to try the new chocomania range, but the body butter/scrubs are made for very dry skin, which I don’t have, so I will have to live with chocolate smelling showers OH DEAR. The Banana shampoo/conditioner is something I’ve been interested in for a while, and I want to see if the current breakouts on my forehead are because of  the shampoo I’ve been using recently.
As I was allowed to pick a free product for spending over £15, I grabbed a small size body butter in Satsuma. It’s designed for normal skin, so I think it should work well for me. The small size is so much better because I never finish body butters! I might use it for my hands, though.

I also went to the Dior counter to get my eyes done with their new mascara – the New Look Mascara. It is SO dramatic, the MUA only put one layer on and my lashes looked so defined and thick. I really love it, and once I finish my other mascaras, I will definitely pick it up. She also used one of the new 5 colour palettes on me, and I adore it. It’s Royal Kaki, #454, and contains perfect smoky eye options – a green based gold, a khaki, a black, a silver and a white.

Basically I left with a product list for the bf for V-day. He wasn’t exactly impressed LOL.

Okay, gotta run!

Yes, I am still alive (albeit barely, uni seems to be out to kill me lately) and I have quote a few things to post soon! I just wanted to mention that this blog now has a twitter account at @Velvetyne_Blog, so if you want to follow me there, please do!

TEXT ► Five minute make up and Holy Grails!

Published January 17, 2012 by Nicoco

Pictureless post because my dresser is a mess and I’m in a hurry.

I will admit I do actually live off “five minute makeup” in the morning. When I have to choose between sleep and a full face, I’m afraid sleep wins every time.

So, what’s in my five minute face list?

1. Prime: Foundation, Eye Primer, Translucent Powder and Moisturiser
I quickly moisturise, place my eye primer on while it’s drying, and whip on foundation using a stippling brush as my base. I find the stippling brush gives the quickest flawless results. Then I set the whole thing with translucent powder.

2. Blusher
This is five minute make up so I skip my attempts at contouring and head straight for a basic blush like Thrrrob by Benefit that lends a natural flushed glow to the cheeks. I only brush it along the cheekbones and blend it in just below the temple as Thrrrob is quite sheer, like most Benefit blushers.

3. Eyes: 17 Cream Eyeshadows, UD Sin, and Dior Extase
17 Cream Eyeshadow in Wild Nude is my go to base for pretty much every colour at the moment. It’s not better than things like MAC Paint Pot, I will admit, but my eyelids can get by with 17 as a base and it’s cheaper! Anyway. That plus Sin brightens up my eye area nicely, which makes a perfect monochrome lid to me. Lastly, with Extase, it just defines and adds a nice bit of volume to my long-ish lashes.

4. Lipgloss/Lipbalm
Since it’s all about being quick, a translucent lipgloss or lipbalm is the kind of thing I can just throw on while running out of the door. At the minute, I’m using UD’s Lip Love in Failbait.

So, there you have it. What kind of things are on your five minute face make up list?

CHALLENGE ► items unused

Published January 14, 2012 by Nicoco

What do the following items have in common?

If you said they’re make up items I always forget to use, you’d be right.

So, I decided that I would keep them on my dresser to try and encourage me to reach for them more than others for a while.

Starting from top, going clockwise:
Skin79 BB Cream: When I first got this (after a hell of a lot of trouble, thank you German Customs), I loved the crap out of it. I really wanted to pale down my skin, and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, it’s very heavy coverage, and I started pulling away from it in favour of foundations that offered more build-ability.  I also gained more confidence in my pale-olive skin tone and felt washed out when wearing it. Now I’m just looking to finish it.

MUA Bronzer in Shade 3: I bought this because it’s a matte bronzer I thought I could use for contouring.  I can, but I underestimated how often I forget to contour. But hopefully I can keep using it and get into a habit of contouring.

Topshop Lipstick in Rumour Has It: I really like both of the lipsticks that were in Topshop’s A/W collection and bought both of them. I probably could have included Pillow Talk in this challenge, now that I think about it. But Rumour Has It is a neutral/nude-brown lipstick that works with loud eyes, I think.

Model’s Own Lipgloss in Golden Nude: To go with Rumour Has It, mostly. I managed to get this while Model’s Own were doing their promo with Diet Coke. Okay. So I totally bought the Coke to try the lipgloss. Shh.

Art Deco Blusher in Shade 11: Like the BB Cream, I loved this when I got it. But I think my style’s evolved beyond wearing such loud blusher. I’m sure I can figure out how to use it up, though.

Diorshow Iconic: I actually still use this quite a lot! But I recently bought 17’s Peep Show Mascara and just want to be sure that I don’t forget that Iconic still exists.

MAC Gel Eyeliner in Blacktrack: I so blame UD’s eyeliner in Rockstar for this. But I’ve been cutting back on the heavy black liner quite a bit (you know, until Perversion is released by itself and I live in it). So I want to use this before it dries.

Barry M Dazzle Dusts: I have about… 8? 9? of these. Which I continually forget to use. I did try to use Pink Gold and Peacock together… it didn’t go well. But I chose the two most neutral colours I own from them (and forgive me, but I cannot remember the names because Barry M uses a number system on the actual jars. :|)

Brightening Primer: I don’t remember who made this – most of the info has faded off it – but it’s basically a cheaper version of eye primers like Lemon Aid.

Shiseido Eyeshadow Single: Yup. More “love ’em and leave ’em” products. It’s a darker brown which I just. Need to finish because there are so many eyeshadows in my stash RN.

Benefit’s The Porefessional: I’m actually not a huge fan of this primer, which is strange because I adore all that Benefit chooses to be. Can’t quite place why – it does reduce pores and make my skin smoother, but I don’t really enjoy using it, when I have my Face Magnet Primer by Pop instead.

Benefit’s Thrrrob Blusher: I kind of threw this and Dallas to the back of my stash a while back, but having it out again reminds me how much I adore it. I hit pan a while back and am just waiting to finish the product up completely.

I guess this is kind of my version of  Project 10 Pan. But I haven’t placed a spending ban yet. I don’t think I could.

I am using other products with these, but trying to concentrate on these lot more for daily use than I have recently. Hopefully it will make way for some more space in my make up drawer, and maybe even kindle some love for some unloved products (or rekindle, in the case of Thrrrob).

This post was brought to you by one of my Christmas Presents: Mr. Owl the necklace! Isn’t it cute?

Urban Decay Lip Love Honey Infused Lip Therapy in ‘Failbait’.

I’m sorry, but if you say something tastes like honey, you can expect me to buy every single one I can afford. But I managed to resist that and only buy the one with my favourite name – Failbait. Though it’s bright orange in the tube, it’s very sheer on, and – a major selling point for me – when I swatched this on my hand, the gloss melted into my hand instead of being a sticky nightmare when I rub it off.

And out of the packaging! You can see the orange even in the crappy lighting of my room/weird yellow tinge of my camera.

L’Oreal Colour Infallible Pressed Eyeshadow in ‘Permanent Kaki’.

I actually try not to buy L’Oreal, because I’m trying to slowly phase out brands that test on animals. It’s a slow process, but the L’Oreal side was quite easy (because none of their products appeal to me) until these went on offer at £3.99 at Superdrug. I just bought the one because none of the other shades really appealed to me quite as much. But I’ve seen so many swatches of this eyeshadow range and so much raving about it. I guess we’ll see if I agree with them!

Chilli Pepper Eyeshadow Palette in Warm.

With Boots having their leftover Christmas stock on sale for half price, I ended up wandering about the place and looking over. This palette immediately caught my eye. I have reservations about buying Christmas palettes like this, because I think we all know how the quality of Christmas palettes can go. But since it was only £4, I can forgive it being crap if it is.

Fearne double ended Make Up Brush set.

Another sale buy. This was £8. I can say now the zip was the dumbest idea, because it’s too short to get the face brushes out easily. I’ve already experienced some shedding with them, as well as the horror that is the so called lip brush end. But aside from those problems, the brush set actually seems quite useable. I certainly prefer the face brushes to the eye/lip brushes, even if they were the most prone to shedding.

And the brushes themselves. L – R: Lip/Eyeshadow? (god I am really not sure tbh) brush | Angled Blusher/Normal Blusher brush | Short Shader/Fluffy Shadow brush | Foundation/Powder brush  | Angled Liner/Pencil Smudge brush

New Year’s Holy Grails

Make up desk

My make up desk! My make up is stored in the polka dot drawers I picked up at WHSmith back in October. The old Glossybox box at the back houses an NYX palette, Dior travel brushes and my make up wipes.

And underneath is my nail polish holder. It’s a Ted Baker carry all and my polishes don’t even half fill it up, but it’s a nice storage place.

So, for my first post, I thought showing my make up desk at uni at the moment would be a nice start. But I’m not stopping there, and I’m adding my Holy Grail products of the moment.

1. Make Me Gorgeous Make Up Bag from Primark
I looked everywhere for a make up  bag that had a second compartment to hold my brushes in. I love this cheap steal (£3) for my make up pieces on the go.

2. Boots Botanics Blemish Prone Day Moisturiser | Vaseline Hand and Nail Moisturiser
I definitely prefer my moisturisers to be light and not oil-based. Botanics’ face moisturiser for blemish prone skin works perfectly with my skin type and the vaseline hand moisturiser is great for daily moisturising.

3. I Love Love perfume by Moschino
Though it doesn’t quite replace Gloria from Cacharel (and nothing will, TBH, I’ve been looking for years), this fresh perfume really helps me feel revitalised.

1. Make up HGs!

2. Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden
Not going to lie, this isn’t without its problems, but I find it so much easier to apply than cream based primers like Benefit’s Lemon Aid.

3. Naked Palette by Urban Decay
What can I say about this palette that hasn’t already been said? A perfect mash of nudes with a lovely black and gunmetal colour to finish it off. I just wish it had more mattes.

1. NYC 4 Colour Palette in Union Square
More nudes! I love this when I don’t want to haul Naked somewhere.

2. 17 Wild Eyes Cream Shadow in Wild Nude
I wear this as a base for almost all my colours – but I particularly love pairing it with Sin from the Naked palette for a monochrome look.

3. MAC Glitter and Ice Mineralise Eyeshadow in Shimmermint
I wasn’t going to buy this after reading reviews and seeing swatches online, but I literally. Cannot. Resist this colour. And even with the wear issues I absolutely adore it.

1. Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner in Rockstar
This liner was recommended to me by one of the UD MUAs, and I’m thrilled with it. It’s an eggplant colour that brings out the green in my eyes perfectly.

2. Diorshow Extase Mascara
This is so small because it was part of the Christmas Gift sets and came with a full size Iconic mascara. But I’m addicted to this one in particular.

3. Pop Face Magnet Primer
This works amazingly at priming the skin. It’s a bit stickier and not as velvety in finish as things like Bare Escentuals’ primer, but it works perfectly at holding the make up.

1. Model’s Own Blusher in Cheeky Pink
I can’t resist a bright pink, especially something as pigmented and buildable as this.

2. Chanel Beige Petale Lipgloss | Collection 2000 Creampuff in Cotton Candy
These two make a perfect combination. The Matte finish Creampuff is a lovely colour, but by itself somewhat drying. I slick the Beige Petale over it to make it a shine finish. But Beige Petale by itself is a lovely natural lipgloss for daily wear – excellent when you’re paying Chanel prices!

And lastly, I can’t resist showing off my lovely new uni bag from Peacocks.

It’s just… well, me in a bag, if I’m honest!
